What is a captive portal?

A captive portal is the login screen your guests see when they connect to your WiFi. Instead of open access, they sign in with an email address, a social account or a code. That gives you their contact details, puts your branding in front of them, and starts the marketing that follows their visit. It is the same screen you have seen in an airport or a hotel lobby, with one difference: this one is yours. Your logo, your colours, your terms, and the data lands in your account rather than in a provider you will never get it back from.

What is WiFi marketing?

WiFi marketing is treating the WiFi you already offer as a marketing channel rather than a utility bill. The login screen collects one contact detail with consent, and everything after that runs on it: a welcome message while the visit is still happening, a review request the day after, an offer when somebody has not been back in a while. Nothing extra is asked of the guest, who only wanted to get online, and nothing extra is asked of your staff, who never have to remember to collect anything. The connection you are already paying for starts returning leads, reviews and repeat visits instead of just bandwidth.

Which routers and access points does Social WiFi work with?

Almost certainly yours. Social WiFi runs on top of the network you already have, so there is no new hardware to buy and nothing to replace. We support 30+ business hardware brands including Ubiquiti UniFi, Cisco Meraki, MikroTik, TP-Link Omada, Aruba, Ruckus, Cambium, Huawei and DrayTek. If you are not sure what you have, send us a photo of the box and we will tell you. Most venues connect their existing equipment in a single session with our team on the call, and nothing changes for the people using the network: same WiFi name, same password if you use one, same speed. The only difference is what happens in the browser when somebody joins.

How long does setup take?

On compatible hardware, updating your existing network takes about 15 minutes. Most single-site businesses are collecting their first guest data the same day. Multi-site rollouts take longer to plan but not longer per venue, and we do the configuration with you rather than handing you a manual. There is no downtime while you change over, and if the new login screen does not look the way you expected, you can put the old one back while we fix it. The 15 minutes covers the network side; the part that takes the real thought is deciding what you want to collect and what you want to send afterwards, and that is the part we help with.

Is collecting guest WiFi data GDPR compliant?

Yes. Consent is collected at the point of login, the data processing agreement is built in, and guests can ask for their data to be deleted at any time. You can set retention rules per location, and the data belongs to you, not to us. Marketing consent is kept separate from getting online, so a guest can connect without opting in, which is exactly what keeps the opt-in valid for the ones who do. Every record carries a timestamp and the wording that was on screen when it was given, which is what a regulator asks to see. If you operate outside the EU, the same controls cover the local equivalents.

What kind of businesses use Social WiFi?

Hotels, restaurants, bars, retail chains, shopping centres, gyms and transport hubs, in 110+ countries. Anywhere that offers guests WiFi and would rather know who they are. The pattern is the same in each: you are already paying for the connection, and a captive portal is how you get something back from it. Transport hubs and shopping centres tend to collect the most contacts per day simply because of footfall, while restaurants, bars and hotels see the fastest return, because a review request sent the morning after a good evening lands better than any campaign you could plan.

Does it work across multiple locations?

Yes, and multi-location brands are where it pays back fastest. One dashboard covers every venue, so you build a portal once and copy it to the rest, compare sites against each other, and give each manager access to their own location without opening up the others. Hotel chains and retail groups usually start with a handful of sites, look at the numbers after a month, and roll out from there. Campaigns can run across the whole group or per venue, and the reporting works either way, so head office sees the total while each manager sees their own.

Can I move over from another guest WiFi provider?

Yes, and it is the most common way people arrive. Because Social WiFi sits on your existing hardware, switching does not mean re-cabling anything. We migrate your existing guest data, rebuild your portal design, and run both in parallel until you are happy. Most moves take about a week from first call to switching the old portal off, and the only two things we need from you are an export of your current contact list and a look at the portal you have now, so the one we build is not a downgrade.
